Over the last couple of weeks, I have been hearing more and more about the Run Free event that is happening in Johannesburg city center on Human Rights Day, 21 March 2012, and today when I opened YouTube to check my daily feed from the awesome people I follow, the featured video in the top right was a promotional video for this event.
The video is really well put together and got me super excited! So excited in fact, that I now wish I was in Jozi for the RunJozi event and my only question is, why did Nike not try and do this on a national level and do it in the main cities of South Africa instead of just Johannesburg? I get that it is more to get people to acknowledge that Joburg city center is a NO-GO at night, but all the same, I think it should have been done in more cities around the country because face it, what Capetonian really wants to fly to Joburg in the middle of the week for a run? I can almost hear the responses now… “Like, showaaa, the mountain told me its safer here”.
In all fairness, I really love the initiative that Nike has taken here and to be honest, I am really jealous of the Gautengers because there is nothing like a good 10km night run! So, to those of you running, Enjoy and to Nike, bring this event to other major cities in South Africa (like Cape Town) because the 2 Oceans Marathon, Argus etc. are not enough for the sculptured bodied, fitness freaks on this side.
Just do it…

Do you need a company like Nike to allow you to run at night? Why not organize something yourself? I see running groups in Cape Town all the time, big ones. Believe it or not, you can JUST DO IT – without Nike.
HILARIOUS that Nike is sponsoring anything on Human Rights Day. You know they’re all made by sweatshop labour in the East, right?
